Writing

The work of the French writer, dramatist, script writer and film director Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) is associated with the Noveau roman movement. The protagonists of her works are trying in vain to find the meaning of life, to escape from loneliness and establish communication – in short, to live a normal life. Her most acclaimed literary work is Ecrire! (Writing). The protagonist of this monumental lament is the authoress herself, so similar to the protagonists of her books. Without making the surrounding reality any prettier, without sidestepping personal disasters – failed relationships, problems with alcoholism – the text rushes like a waterfall; a riveting, uncontrolled flow of words revealing the heart of the author’s art and personality.
