Silence and Light
Louis I. Kahn
The work of Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974) has a special position in post-war American and international architecture. It sits on the borderline between two distinct periods: the International style and postmodernism. It is so unique that it forbids any imitation or further elaboration. Khan found his unique style when he was nearly 50; in a period of nascent luxury and sumptuous effects he espoused a radical austerity of geometry and an unusual simplicity of materials. It is no accident that Kahn’s career reached its peak in poor countries like Pakistan or Bangladesh, where he built unique government buildings. The first Czech edition of his lectures and essays will serve the purpose of initiation for the Czech readership.
