Raw Art – A collection of Jan Švankmajer and Eva Švankmajerová

This monograph introduces the art collection of Jan Švankmajer and Eva Švankmajerová, which can be compared to the collection of a great poet and collector, André Breton. Like him, Jan Švankmajer and Eva Švankmajerová do not accumulate objects randomly; they juxtapose artworks and objects from different cultures based on analogy and mutual correspondence. They focus on the poetic power of the objects; their interests range from surrealism, spiritistic drawings, raw art (art brut) to African ritual objects. The wide range and quality of the artworks represented in the collection make it absolutely unique in the Czech Republic and maybe in the entire world.
