On Artists
Emil Filla
Emil Filla (1882–1953) was a renaissance type of artist. He embodied a painter, graphic designer, sculptor, historian and art theorist, philosopher, poet and prose writer. His articles can be perceived as not only theoretical bases to his artwork but first and foremost belle-letters. This anthology contains Filla’s monographic portrayals of such figures as El Greco, Rembrandt, Honoré Daumier, Edvard Munch, Karel Purkyně or Josef Lada. They were destructors of tradition rather than prominent figures representing the peak of certain evolutionary period. The texts present a fitting illustration of the width of Filla’s interests as well as the depth of his understanding of art.
