Madame Gali - The Expressionist Work of Marie Galimberti-Provázková (1880–1951)
Martina Pachmanová. Marie Rakušanová, Julie Weissová, Jakub Valášek, František Fürbach
The book focuses on the painting, drawing and printmaking by Marie Galimberti-Provázková, one of the somewhat lesser-known Czech female artists from the first half of the 20th century. It defines her place in the context of modern art in Bohemia and Moravia and her relationship to the art production by her female contemporaries and, last but not least, it points out the important connections of her work with art activity abroad. Marie Galimberti-Provázková left her native country at an early age for many years and her work formed abroad. Her studies in the studio of Fernand Léger in Paris at the Académie Russe were an important step in her professional career. Her still-lifes, landscapes, portraits and self-portraits stem from the tradition of French Post-Impressionism and Cubism but they also bear the significant influence of German Expressionism and plein air painting developed in the important Central European artist colony in Nagybány in Hungary. The book devoted to “Madame Gali”, as she was called by some of her contemporaries and friends, shows that she was a distinguished personality who deserves a unique place in modern art in Bohemia.
