Jan Pištěk, Martin Dostál

  • Translation: Richard Drury

Jan Pištěk (1961) emerged at the Czech artistic scene together with the so-called generation of the 1980s. Symbolic references to archaic cultures started to appear in his work as soon as the unofficial exhibitions of the new Czech painting started. Unlike his contemporaries, his paintings have been quieter and more contemplative. Also versatile, multidimensional, polythematic, but we always recognize his typical handwriting. The grandiosity of his artistic gesture and the monumentality of approach to the surface is usually accompanied by a minimalist detail, a counterpoint expressed in a fine drawing pointing at the artistic spirituality of both the Near and Far East. At the exhibition “Link 4 pictures” in the Mánes, Prague Jan Pištěk will exhibit a selection of his most recent works, complemented by examples taken from his last fifteen years. The large size paintings series which will be publicly introduced for the first time this February, is a lose follow-up of an extensive cycle of the Japanese Gardens from the first half of the 1990s. A selective-retrospective catalogue is being published for the exhibition.

The book is produced in a bilingual Czech and English edition.
