Letters from My Windmill
Alphonse Daudet
The classical writer of French prose Alphonse Daudet (1840–1897) has been regarded as the leading figure of Naturalism, although, he never shared its pessimism and believed in the goodness of humble man, whose idealized image constitutes many protagonists of his works. This is also true about The Letters from My Windmill. Moving and beautiful stories form his native Provence reach, in their homeliness, almost magic power. The stories have been selected and illustrate by the Czech sculptor Miloslav Chlupáč (1920) – the images represent his first illustrations marked with a unique sculptural style and sensitivity. A fortunate harmony that may bring readers’ attention to the neglected author.
