Late Texts
Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was the leader of Fauvism who used bright splashes of colour and their rhythm to construct shape and space. Later, in addition to the colour, he started to gradually employ the line. He was the master of colour and painting abbreviation. He was not fond of theorising, however, under the pressure of circumstances he was forced to explain his approach to artwork and formulate his reflection of art. Our compilation focuses on texts from the last twenty years of his artistic career and includes, besides his authorial texts, three interviews and excerpts from his correspondence, arranged in a way that clearly expresses artist’s deep insight to all fundamental themes and at the same time reflects the ethical dimension of his character.
