In the words of successful Czech architect Ivan Kolecek (1943) – who has since 1969 lived and worked in Lausanne, a Swiss town on the bank of Geneva lake, where he founded his architectonic studio – architecture can be experienced by anyone, not only by mere looking but also by feeling its spatial organisation, perceiving its light, atmosphere and contexts. An architectonic work never ceases to live; our perception of it becomes striated as it enters the chronicles of history. These inspirational thoughts are central to Kolecek’s original “architectonic confession”, divided into eight chapters (Light, City, Place, Marks, Inner – Outer, Materials, Architecture and Art, Towers Never Built) and concluded with an overview of all his works completed both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Since 1990 the author has been teaching at the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology, leading the Architectonic Studio. In 1996, as part of the Grand Prix exhibition, Ivan Kolecek was awarded a prize by the Architecture Community given to expatriate Czech artists working abroad. The book is supplemented by rich photographic documentation presenting a selection of visually very attractive projects.
