Interviews
Francis Bacon
In the post-war rise of op-art, monochrome painting and conceptual art, Francis Bacon (1909–1992), aged 35, chooses to return to the traditional techniques, figures and action. He created a monumental work, unique in the context of the second half of the 20th century. De arte series presents the translation of Bacon’s interviews with a famous British art critic David Sylvester from the period 1962–1979. The interviews contain remarks on surrealism and cubism, as well as on Eliot, Valéry, Michelangelo, Duchamp, Rembrandt or Munch. Bacon – drunk, gambler and daredevil – analyses the background of artwork in depth and with great accuracy. This publication is a perfect key to understanding one of the greatest figures of the last century. Graham Greene has noted that “it is an exciting document comparable to the Delacroix’s diary”.
