Agnes Martin

  • Translation: Martin Pokorný
  • Editor: Stanislav Kolíbal

Agnes Martin (1912–2004) was an American painter associated with the 1960s art form known as minimal art. She developed her distinctive style in the 1950s in New York. It was based on the most elementary linear rhythms of recurring horizontals and geometrical structures, which she discovered even before the famous representatives of minimal art such as Donald Judd or Frank Stella who created their works at the beginning of the 1960s. Agnes Martin had never belonged to a certain art group – she remained a solitary figure. Her texts oscillating between meditation and poem reflect deep concentration and the life secluded from popularity and the buzz of the art scene.
