Běla Kolářová

Since 1960s Bělá Kolářová has belonged to the most remarkable representatives of Czech visual art and photography. Her exceptional work developed in parallel with her husband’s, Jiří Kolář, however, it has never been in its shadow. A Czech-German retrospective monograph published in a joint effort of Arbor vitae and Egon Schiele Art Centre contains Josef Hlaváček’s important article “The Story of Bělá Kolářová” (with a number of documentary photographs), which for the first time reveals Běla Kolářová not only as an author of assemblages and collages, but also as an artist without whose innovative contribution the context of Czech postwar photography would not be at all complete.
