Artist – Critic
Barnett Newman
Painter and theorist Barnett Newman (1905–1970) had been long known as a curator and theorist only. He developed his individual artistic expression based on minimal geometric elements in an advanced age. He encountered an immediate incomprehension when working close with other New York artists associated predominantly with abstract expressionism. However, the next generation of artists has accepted his work as a platform for their minimal art programme. For our series, we selected interviews, essays and keynote speeches from Newman’s theoretical legacy that illustrate not only his work but also the climate of the artistic New York in the 1960s.
