Plastique ludique / Petr Nikl: Dialogue with Mum

Libuše Niklová at the Museé des Arts décoratifs in Paris Petr Nikl in the Czech Center Paris

Organized by Arbor vitae societas.

After the successful premiere of the retrospective of Libuše Niklová and the concurrent exhibition of Petr Nikl in the House of Art in Zlín, and in Prague at the Museum of Decorative and the Hvezda Summer Pavillion (Museum of Czech Literature), the work of this outstanding designer is to be presented in the prestigious Musée des Arts décoratifs, located in the Louvre in Paris.
Some of Niklová’s innovative toys belong to the icons of Czech design, they had a positive influence on the childhood of several generations, both domestically and abroad, where they were exported. With the exhibition in Paris, her work will thus come to be discovered and recognized outside the Czech Republic. In Paris, the exhibition of her toys designed from the mid-1950s to 1981 will maintain the same concept as the exhibition in Prague dividing her work into several chapters, created by the curator of the exhibition, Tereza Bruthansová. The installation of the exhibition, overseen by the well-known artist Petr Nikl, the designer’s son, will present her work in a new interesting light while also utilizing the beautiful interior of the museum.
Parisian public will have the opportunity to see a concurrent exhibition of the work of Petr Nikl in the nearby Czech Centre. In this gallery a few years earlier, this renaissance personality of the Czech art scene, fine artist, musician and performer, presented his successful project Orbis Pictus. Now he returns to present an intimate, creative dialogue between mother and son through paintings, drawings, illustrations and objects inspired both intuitively and directly by his mother. Both exhibitions will be accompanied by events for both children and adults. The French public as well as numerous visitors from abroad will have the unique opportunity to encounter the work of two outstanding representatives of Czech culture through two solo exhibitions.

Czech Centre in Paris presents the famous Czech artist, illustrator and theater actor Petr Nikl, who through paintings, drawings and puppets creates an artistic dialogue with his mother, Libuse Niklova. For Petr Nikl represents his mother's work one of the main sources of inspiration for his distinctive poetry. In parallel with this exhibition in Paris is  held a retrospective of Libuse Niklova at the museum Les Arts Décoratifs Plastique Ludique. This exhibition pays tribute to this famous Czech toys designer.
